Yerba Maté

A new blend from our Traditional Tea range – find out if Yerba Maté is right for you.

You will love our Yerba Maté if,

you are looking for a high caffeine alternative to coffee or black tea and enjoy tea with earthy and vegetal notes.

What is in our Yerba Maté tea?

Our Yerba Maté is an organic, green variety of yerba Maté leaf which is sourced from Brazil. There are no other ingredients or additives in this product. Native to South America, yerba maté was traditionally consumed by the indigenous Guaraní and Tupi peoples for its high caffeine content and rich antioxidant properties. Caffeine has a stimulating effect on the nervous system and can support energy production, vitality and mental clarity. Yerba Maté can be prepared in a teapot, like a traditional green tea, and offers a vegetal, earthy and slightly toasty flavour.

Our ingredients for this blend are sourced from Brazil – and hand packed with care, by us, in Victoria, Australia.

How do you brew Yerba Maté?

Traditionally Yerba Maté is prepared in a hollowed-out gourd, which is the fruit of the Calabash tree. We have found that brewing Yerba Matè in a teapot, as you would a traditional tea, offers a convenient yet still flavorful brew while allowing you to use the tools you already have at home.

Place a heaped teaspoon (2 grams) of tea per cup (250ml) into a teapot or infuser. Add filtered water at 75°C – 85°C and allow to infuse for 3–4 minutes. Strain the tea and serve.

Does Yerba Maté contain caffeine?

The naturally occurring caffeine content in a cup of yerba maté tea is approximately 80mg per cup, which is slightly less than the caffeine content in a cup of coffee. However, it is commonly reported that many of the negative effects often experienced from the caffeine in coffee, such as anxiety, energy slumps and poor sleep quality, are not experienced after yerba maté.

What are the benefits of Yerba Maté?

The presence of polyphenols offers abundant antioxidant properties. This powerful antioxidant content and naturally occurring caffeine content, have been linked with yerba matès’ traditional use in supporting the immune system, and stimulating the central nervous system. It has also traditionally been used to support energy production, mental focus and memory, and to enhance physical performance. It is best enjoyed in the morning, to ensure the stimulating effect and caffeine content are utilised before the evening.

What is our packaging made from?

The clear pouch that holds our Yerba Maté is not made from plastic. It is made from a renewable plant-based cellophane, which can also easily be home composted and will break down in a few short months if composted correctly.

The cardboard is made from post-consumer recycled board, is printed with vegetable-based inks and can also be home composted after use where it will break down in a few short months if composted correctly.

Our pyramid tea bags are also not made from plastic. They are made from a biodegradable, non-GMO, plant-based material called Soilon, which meets all compostability standards in Japan, North America and Europe. However it is important to note, they will definitely take longer than other compost items to decompose. The material manufacturers recommend commercial composting as a quicker alternative to address this longer time of breakdown.

If you are looking for the most environmentally friendly option, we will always recommend drinking loose leaf tea.
