What is the plastic bag that holds your tea made out of?

If you purchase Love Tea you will notice a plastic looking pouch inside the box. This pouch resembles plastic but it’s actually a biodegradable plant-based cellophane made from a product called NatureFlex. These bags are definitely not poly-propylene based bags like most plastic pouches, which means you can easily home compost our cellos and they will break down naturally over a very short time.

What is NatureFlex?

NatureFlex is a clear film that is made out of renewable wood pulp from managed plantations. While most renewable packaging is based on corn, potatoes or sometimes wheat, NatureFlex uses cellulose, which is one of the world’s most naturally abundant organic materials.

Why do we use NatureFlex?

Food waste is responsible for 7% of greenhouse gas emissions and 20% of landfill. As we are a company that contributes to the production of a food product, we thought it was vital that we diverted as much waste from landfill as possible. We literally spend thousands of additional dollars each year just on our cello bags, so that we can provide a more environmentally friendly biodegradable option. It’s one of the many ways we do our small part to help reduce the negative effects business has on the environment.

Is NatureFlex biodegradable?

As NatureFlex is made from organic material it is both biodegradable and compostable. We have tested the compostability in our own home compost and have found it usually breaks down within 6 months depending on the composting environment.
